Swapping homes

There are alternatives to the traditional idea of booking a holiday and decamping to a hotel, villa, guest house or B&B. You could put your place up for rent on Airbnb and use the rent money to toddle off somewhere for the length of the rental.

Or you could swap your home for someone elses as Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz did in the film The Holiday. But swapping houses means you really need to be able to trust the people with whom you swap so that the house you leave looks like the house you come back to.

Two companies that specialise in the swap market have just been combined allowing not far from 100,000 properties from which to choose. The two companies – Love Home Swap and HomeForExchange – will continue to operate as separate brands. Between them they have some 75,000 members across 160 countries meaning that the range of destinations in which members can swap the houses covers most of the countries that make up the United Nations.

The company has also signed a deal with Wyndham Worldwide   – the huge international timeshare letting/ reseller and hotel group – to enable it to expand internationally. The founder of Love Home swap, Debbie Wosskow,  who was part inspired by The Holiday to set up Love Home Swap, says that other acquisitions will follow in the next eighteen months suggesting that, in a few years’ time, swapping may be as popular as timeshare. Airbnb has gone from just 2,000 users in 2010 to an estimated 1 million over new year 2015.

Could Love Home Swap be as successful and change the way we holiday in the future?
