Where the experts holiday: Jack Archer, co-founder of Ruumi

Jack Archer – co-founder of Ruumi, a new social platform and service that aims to take the stress out of finding the right place to rent in the capital, talks travel

What do you like to do on holiday?
I like a combination of exploring and relaxing – warm weather for outdoor activities and chilling on the beach, plus indulging in great food and plenty of wine!

Where did you last go?
I went to Cinque Terre in Italy with my girlfriend in September. It had all of the above – fantastic.

Do you know where you’re going this year?
I’ve recently launched a new site called Ruumi – a social platform for house shares, so I’m going to be pretty flat out for the next 12 months. I might squeeze in a small trip in to Paris in April to celebrate my 30th birthday though.

Of all the places you’ve been to, which was your favourite and why?
That’s a very difficult question, but I’ll opt for Malaysia. My girlfriend and I went to Kuala Lumpar and Langkawi a couple of years ago – super-friendly people, amazing food, breathtaking scenery, lovely weather and nut-stealing monkeys, what more could you want?

Which destination do you wish to travel to, but haven’t yet been?
I’m yet to venture to any of South America and that’s top of the list. I always hear good things and would love to visit countries like Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides?
I’m living in London at the moment but I’m originally from Christchurch in Dorset. I love going home, and would thoroughly recommend taking a brisk walk across Hengistbury Head, with its stunning views and great beaches, then onto the adjacent Mudeford Quay, for a spot of crabbing.

How do you plan your holiday? (Guidebooks/website/agent/recommendations etc)
To be truthful, my girlfriend is a particularly good planner so I tend to leave most of it to her! I do pitch in with ideas though, after looking into recommended restaurants or places to see online.

How often do you go away?
Typically twice a year but now I have a child in Ruumi, I’ll be lucky to take one this year!

Who do you travel with?
I usually travel with my girlfriend, but I like to take weekend breaks with friends too. As a small group of lads, we’ve been all over Europe including Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels. It’s great fun and usually a good price.

Where do you see tourism in your country, in 10 years?
I think as the sharing economy continues to grow, it’ll focus more on swapping homes and cultures – whether that be with people from other countries, or within the UK.

Thanks Jack! Billed as ‘Airbnb-meets-Tinder’, Ruumi matches compatible housemates with amazing places to rent. Ruumi is currently available in Tower Hamlets and Hackney Borough with plans for a full roll-out across London imminent.
