Yesterday, booking opened for what is likely to be one of the most popular attractions of the summer.

A giant gingerbread house popped up on London’s South Bank to act as a ticket office and to gather publicity to promote Shrek’s Adventure! London which opens in July. After the musical which proved to be a big attraction and money spinner, comes the tourist attraction.

Called an “immersive attraction” and created by Merlin Entertainments in collaboration with the film company DreamWorks, Shrek’s Adventure! London will feature a cast including Shrek and Princess Fiona, Donkey and Gingy the Gingerbread Man. They will star in shows and sets from the Shrek films, plus a 4D bus ride, special effects and new DreamWorks animation. It will be located at County Hall on London’s South Bank just up from the London Eye

Will this be the forerunner of more collaboration between the two companies? Dream Works has also been behind animated films such as Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and  How to Train Your Dragon so will they be considered for establishing attractions if Shrek is successful?

The idea of the gingerbread pop-up ticket office has also inspired the organisers to tell us that the house was built using 525 kilos of flour, 2136 teaspoons of ginger, sixty gobstoppers, 700 gingerbread tiles and fifty giant jelly babies. What they don’t say is how long he house might last or what will happen to it afterwards.

As to be expected, the organisers say that you should book early to avoid disappointment as they forecast a sell-out. In Shrek’s case, they could well be right!
