The Easter getaway is upon us

Starting today, some 1.8 million people will be leaving the UK for an Easter break with who knows how many taking to the roads for domestic breaks.

Some 393,000 will leave just through Heathrow with a further 411,000 coming in to the country demonstrating that we are just as much an Easter attraction as we see other countries. This is the highest number of passengers that Heathrow has ever handled so maybe it’s just as well that the Heathrow Express has halved its fares over this period. Nearly half of all those expected to fly out will leave through the four main London airports.

But getting from other parties of our countries through to Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted by public transport will be time consuming given that Euston, Paddington, Liverpool Street and London Bridge stations in London all have closures. Do allow extra time if you plan on using the railway.

As for the roads, a lot of roadworks have been removed for the holiday period but not all. Expect to have bottlenecks in the usual places such as the M25 (almost anywhere) the M4/M5 interchange near Bristol, anywhere around the M42 in Birmingham the M62 around Manchester not forgetting the  M8 around Glasgow which always seems horrendous whenever I use it.

You’ll never guess the most popular overseas destination for British and Irish holidaymakers this Easter? Yes, Spain, the perennial favourite for decades. And within that country, the Canaries and the Balearics are where many of us will be headed to but fewer of us will heading to the US as the sterling currency decline against the dollar seems to be having an effect. Mind you, last minute bookings may alter that as bargains can be had. Florida and New York are still popular but

Oddly enough though, Switzerland is attracting more skiers than many thought since the Swiss franc appreciated against sterling and the euro making it more expensive to go there. People going to Switzerland might have more money or the Swiss have done a persuasive bit of marketing to get us there.

Wherever you go this Easter, from all of us here at Just about Travel, have a wonderful break
