Confused Ryanair

Ryanair

A few days is a long time in travel to paraphrase the UK’s late Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

No sooner had Ryanair announced that it was planning transatlantic flights than it issued a statement to the London Stock Exchange that it wasn’t contemplating any such thing.  That statement said – and I quote it in full – “In the light of recent press coverage, the Board of Ryanair Holdings Plc wishes to clarify that it has not considered or approved any transatlantic project and does not intend to do so.” That must be one of the shortest press releases ever issued but seems precise.

The question is what happened between Monday and Wednesday evening when this release was presumably written? Had Michael O’Leary – the big boss not cleared his comments with the board. Had someone not cleared the comments with O’Leary.

And does this matter to the ordinary traveller like you and me?

It matters to me because I wrote a piece about it for the Saturday column. Preparing for a wedding, I wrote the column on Wednesday so it makes look a lemon but that is minor. Secondly it misleads you and finally it makes us all mistrustful of anything that corporate Ryanair says.  That the press release isn’t even on Ryanair’s own website makes you wonder whether they are trying to forget the whole confusion ever happened!
