Not only is 2015 the anniversary of the end of the American Civil War it is also the anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

The anniversary will be remembered at a number of events across the US but, if you are interested, you could start with a video I found on YouTube. There is a grainy interview with a man, Samuel J Seymour, who – as a child – was taken to Ford’s Theatre that fateful night and saw Lincoln’s death. He felt sorry for the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, as that man broke his leg jumping to avoid his pursuers!

Ford’s Theatre Society have organised an exhibition which will run for two months from the 23rd of March, ‘Silent Witnesses: Artifacts of the Lincoln Assassination, at the Center for Education and Leadership. Visitors will be able to see the artefacts up-close and truly learn about Lincoln’s assassination and its impact. Artefacts featured include Lincoln’s top hat and John Wilkes Booth’s Derringer pistol, whilst Lincoln’s carriage will also be on display at the National Museum of American History on the same dates.

In Baltimore, about 50 miles from Washington DC and served by train, the B&O Railroad Museum will be re-enacting President Lincoln’s funeral procession in April 2015.There will be an exact replica of Lincoln’s casket, as well as music and military and civilian re-enactors. For the remainder of 2015, the B&O Civil War locomotive will be decorated as Lincoln’s funeral train.

From 25 March to 15 April, the Smithsonian in Washington DC will also be displaying some of the last artefacts U.S. President Abraham Lincoln came into contact with the night he was killed, as part of an independent exhibit to mark the 150th anniversary of his assassination. From the last tea cup he sipped to the top hat he put on at Ford’s Theatre, the Smithsonian pays homage to the man who transformed the nation with his proclamation of freedom for slaves.
