Manila is the capital of fun, part of an ongoing tourism campaign

Last November Just about Travel mentioned that the Philippines Department of Tourism would be launching a campaign to persuade more of us to holiday there. The campaign has begun!

Using the strapline, “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” Visit the Philippines Year 2015 will feature an eclectic mix of events and festivals including concerts in Manila from international artists such as One Direction and Bastille. But who wants to see that? Visitors would prefer to see Filipino culture and music so it is just as well that a number of Filipino will be holding gigs as well.

The campaign will also unveil some of the Philippines’ historic treasures and natural wonders promoting the rich culture and heritage of the country, including one of the world’s New7Wonders of Nature, Palawan’s famed Puerto Princesa Underground River, and the historic town of Vigan, recently named as one of the New7Wonder Cities.

For those who haven’t been to the Philippines, it is a real country of contrasts. Western culture and American influences mix freely with Filipino ones. But in a chain hotel when my wife and I went into dinner one evening, we were the only people eating Filipino food. All the other diners were eating steaks and American influenced dishes!

The country is an archipelago composed of 7,107 islands and is divided into three main islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. English and Spanish are widely spoken but the local language is Tagalog although hat is ne of  languages spoken in the country.

London will be the main target of their promotion and “110 London taxis will  carry posters sporting destinations such as Albay, Banaue, Bohol and Palawan. The tip-up seats will also feature Davao and Vigan and 15 fully wrapped buses around London will showcase Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, Banaue, Vigan, Siargao, Cagayan de Oro, Albay, Cebu and Davao with VPY 2015 at the back. Another 10 new routemasters (on bus routes  9 & 10) will also promote the two most known paradise destinations in the country – Boracay and Palawan.
