Mzaar and the Intercontinental Hotel

The snow covered mountains in Lebanon provide visitors with two winter holiday options. Along the coast the temperatures are mild with warm days and cool evenings allowing pleasant visits in the balmy days to ancient cities of Byblos, Sidon and Tyre.

But more often than not, British visitors head to the nearby ski slopes and combine the best of both worlds by skiing in the morning and enjoying the warm sunshine on the coast in the afternoon.

It’s hard to think of Middle East countries being blanketed by snow but Lebanon is the one country that makes you re-think your prejudice. In Arabic, “Lubnan”- from which comes the name of the country – means “white.” Guess what the “white” refers to?

With six resorts catering to skiers of all levels as well as families there are cross-country courses, snowshoe trails as well to appeal to most winter snow enthusiasts.

Each of the ski resorts has its own attractions. The Cedars Ski Resort is to be found on the highest slopes of Mount Makmel and is visited not only for the skiing but the scenery which turns it into a year-round resort. Mzaar is the most well-known resort perhaps because it offers the best facilities, is just an hour from Beirut and also about the same time it takes to get to the coast. Laqlouq and Qanat Bakiche are more family oriented appealing to the holidaymaker rather than the ski fanatics. Finally, Faqra and Zaarour are private ski resorts and you will have to book directly or with their agents in order to manage to ski at peak times

You can obtain visas before you travel to the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, or you can collect a visa on arrival at the airport. Those whose passports contain an Israeli stamp will be lucky to obtain entry so those concerned may want to consider having a second passport.
