The Ryder Cup is over; bring on the next

Hardly had the fingerprints been wiped off the cup after the win by the Europeans at the weekend than tour operators were out selling the next meeting between the two.

After Gleneagles, it travels to an American destination and this time it is to a place that many younger Brits won’t recognise – Hazeltine National Golf Club which is in Chaska. Older readers might remember it as the place where Tony Jacklin won his US Open in 1970.

Still unsure where it is? If I say it is one of the prettiest states of the US, where there is so much outdoors that you can hunt and fish without necessarily seeing another human and that it has one of the most popular and one of the biggest shopping malls in America you might guess. It is Minnesota. Which is also one of the cleanest and greenest states as well as having my record for the fastest time exiting a plane, getting through passport control and being on a bus to a hotel – 13 minutes!

So is it any wonder that within 12 hours of holiday packages to the state going on sale for the 2016 cup, there were 300 firmish enquiries.

Hazeltine is only about 25 minutes south of Minneapolis so visitors won’t spend ages getting to their destination. Luckily for us, there are direct flights on Delta from London to Minneapolis-St Paul and one person whispered to me that our own national carrier was considering flights to the destination after the success of their recently opened Austin flights.

Incidentally, there are over 500 golf courses in Minnesota, which given the state’s population of about 5.4 million means there is one golf course for every 11,000 people. There must be a lot of golf fanatics there!

For golf widows, this is one of the best locations the organisers could pick for there will be plenty of things  to do whilst partners dress in funny hats and cheer themselves hoarse as they follow the Europeans around to another victory.
