Roland Svensson of The Sarojin

Roland Svensson moved to Bangkok. He has worked in hotels and resorts all over the Far East and is currently the general manager of The Sarojin in Thailand. Located in Khao Lak about an hour from Phuket, it is set in lush tropical gardens, is surrounded on most sides by national parks and borders and has a secluded 11km white sandy beach. Plus it’s own luxury yacht!

What do you like to do on holiday?

I like to explore places I haven’t been to with my family.

Where did you last travel?

To Singapore. I used to live and work there so we have a lot of friends in the city, and we like it very much.

Do you know where you’re going next?

Still in the planning phase.

Stockhom

Stockholm

Of all the places you’ve been to, what was your favourite and why?

Stockholm in the summer. It’s the most beautiful and amazing capital in the world with so much to do and explore. I was born in Sweden but haven’t lived there for almost 40 years.

Which destination do you wish to travel to but haven’t been there yet?

I would love to travel through New Zealand in a motorhome. It is supposed to be amazing with so much to see and discover.

What would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides but which you’ve seen?

Explore a local food market in Thailand, especially the morning markets, as you can really experience true Thai daily life there. The bustling Takuapa food market near The Sarojin is a great place to pick up fresh goods and get a unique glimpse of local life.

How do you plan a vacation?

I take recommendations from friends and websites, magazines, TV programmes and social media.

In which of the hotels where you have been based did you find the most appealing?

The Sarojin, hands down. (not that he is biased! – ed)

What would you recommend people do whilst at The Sarojin? And elsewhere?

Definitely try our award-winning spa, Pathways; go on a sunset cruise on our luxury yacht Lady Sarojin; go to the world famous dive sanctuaries of the Similan and Surin Islands national marine parks; have a private waterfall dinner which is amazing; and visit our multi award-winning wine cellar and bar. Furthermore, our Imagineering team can create personalised experiences during a stay with us, whether a surprise for a partner or simply to organise an unforgettable event.
