Cardiff Castle – see where the NATO leaders met but on the open days!

Every September, buildings of every age and style open their doors for you to visit them in the UK. And this includes any number of buildings that don’t open at any other time of the year.

This is a European initiative so the openings aren’t just limited to our countries. Openings will be all over Europe so take advantage of this if you happen to be holidaying in Europe this month. Check with the national tourism boards for dates and what is open or you can start by going to the European Heritage Days website by clicking here.

In all 50 countries which are party to the European Cultural Convention participate. During this time, doors are opened to numerous monuments and sites, allowing us to enjoy free visits and learn about their shared cultural heritage and encouraging them to become actively involved in the safeguard and enhancement of this heritage for present and future generations. About 20 million of us will take advantage of this opportunity.

For England, you can see what’s happening in your area by going to the Heritage Oen days website or by clicking here. For Northern Ireland, the site is the Northern Ireland Tourist Board site or you can click here. For Scotland, the website is called Doors Open Days or you can click here.  In Wales, it is co-ordinated by Cadw and you can click here to find out more. For those in the Republic, their open days were in the second half of August this year (apologies for not mentioning this earlier) but France hold theirs on the 20th and 21st of September as does Brussels in Belgium. But Flanders in Belgium hold their open day on the 14th  as it is in GermanyWallonia in Belgium celebrates it on both the 13th and 14th as do the Netherlands   and Switzerland. For the dates of all the participating countries, click here.

Not all buildings open will have free entry but as Cadw in Wales is celebrating its 30th anniversary, it is offering 100,000 free tickets for those who register on their website for those sites that make a charge. Click here to be taken to the registration page.
