September is wedding month on the “Pearl Coast” in eastern Hainan

For those of you who got married this year or are planning to be married before June 30th next year, do you fancy winning a second honeymoon?

To publicise Hainan island – often dubbed “China’s Hawaii” – as the world’s top travel and wedding destination, the local tourism office has launched a worldwide competition. There will be ten winners who will be awarded with international round-trip tickets; 5 nights at luxury resorts in Hainan; exclusive yacht, helicopter and golf experiences; and wedding photography to remind you of your success.

To enter – by the 17th of October –  you have to submit one high-resolution photo representing your dream island wedding/honeymoon and answer four questions (no more than 200 words per answer) which can be found on the  Visit Hainan Facebook page ( or email:   You will be judged on the following criteria which are described as: originality (30%), feasibility (20%), shareability (20%), submission quality (10%) and voting (20%).

    • Tell them what your dream wedding looks like
    • Tell them why your idea deserves to win
    • Tell them what you know about Hainan
    • Tell them how you will spread the word about your dream wedding or honeymoon experience

The winners will be announced on the 31st of October 2014 and the prize has to be taken in the second week of December this year.

But why Hainan? What’s there to justify acclaim to be the world’s top wedding and travel destination? Click here to see what Kaye said when she went there.   The press release says that it has “beautiful beaches, (such as Yalong Bay) and  tropical rainforests, luxury yachts, excellent seafood, world-class golf courses and heavenly resorts and hotels.”   The west cost is called the Chinese riviera. It also points out that since it was designated as an “International Tourism Island” in 2010, Hainan has become one of the world’s fastest growing travel and tourism economies, attracting some 25 million tourists every year. It also has the world’s largest duty-free shopping centre – Haitangwan Duty-Free Shopping Centre in Sanya – which opened just yesterday. Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, USA, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia and Thailand are the top 10 foreign arrivals in Hainan in 2012-2013.

You will notice that neither the UK nor Ireland is in the top 10 nations providing visitors to this area despite the growing number of people making China their holiday choice. Here’s the opportunity for some of you to find more about the area,
