Kieran – waiting for campers

At Pembrey Country Park alongside Cefn Sidan- the country’s longest beach stretching over eight miles long – there is a new feature. A concierge for the campsite.

It has come about because the tourism authority for Carmarthenshire decided, in the words of Huw parsons – the head of tourism for the Welsh county – “to encourage more campers by providing a free expert to help them with any of their camping queries.” He argues that many people are put off camping by the thought of having to put up tents, pitching in the right location and bringing all the correct kit with them.

Is this any more than a gimmick? Is it just a way to get some publicity for the county and Pembrey in particular?

Kieran Mayo has been appointed for the summer and his role is to make life as easy as possible for the campers.  A typical day for Mayo could be assisting campsite guests with all of their outdoor living requirements; from helping to find the perfect pitch and solving tent-related queries, pumping up inflatable mattresses and replacing broken tent pegs, to assisting with campfire conundrums and outdoor-cooking challenges.  His background is in environmental conservation, having worked for organisations like the National Trust as a woodland warden and elsewhere teaching bushcraft and forestry education

To be appointed, the council was looking for someone who possessed “a passion for camping, as well as a love for the great Carmarthenshire outdoors and desire to learn more about the surrounding county.” It also helped to experience in outdoor cooking, (doesn’t everyone- usually with disastrous burnt offerings) pitching in bad / hot weather and knowledge of tent maintenance.

Does Mayo measure up to this daunting role?  You can find out. He will be stationed at Pembrey Country Park next to Cefn Sidan beach from 4- 31 August 2014.
