Mark Middleton of Oasis Overland Adventure Travel on Europe, Ethiopia and why Iran is underrated

What do you like to do on holiday?
I like to go walking, cycling and also to see historical sites. Basically I like to be on the go – I can’t sit down or relax on a beach!

Where did you last go?
My last trip was to Europe – namely Italy and Croatia.

Northern Lights

Do you know where you’re going this year?
Yes: over the Arctic Circle in Norway to (hopefully) see the Northern Lights.

Of all the places you’ve been to, what was your favourite and why?
That’s a very difficult question but, and this might come as a surprise, Iran stands out.  The  locals were extremely friendly and welcoming and me feel right at home.

Which destination do you wish to travel to, but haven’t yet been?

Ethiopia is high up on the wish list.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides?
My home county of Lincolnshire!  It is known as a flat county, but there are some amazing cycle trails and walks in the Wolds that are still undiscovered to anyone save for the locals.  There are also some fantastic little villages with thatched cottages and charming teashops that are worth a look.

How do you plan your holiday?
I often pick a destination due to a historical site or a particular activity.  I would sketch together a rough itinerary of what I want to do and places I know about, and a lot of the actual planning is done on the ground from talking to locals.  I don’t like to know too much about a place – I like to discover as I go.

How often do you go away?
As often as possible, even if it’s just for a weekend.  I squeeze in at least one long haul trip per year, and two if I’m lucky and can afford it!

Who do you travel with?
Usually I travel with my girlfriend.

Where do you see tourism in your country, in 10 years?

Jessica Ennis

Jessica Ennis

I think the UK received some amazing publicity during and in the aftermath of the Olympics and London has certainly become one of the world’s most iconic cities.  So I can see tourism being a real help to the UK economy over the coming years.
