Brittany’s Glastonbury – and other festivals

CornwallFestivalLes Vieilles Charrues is Glastonbury’s Gallic cousin and it begins tomorrow. Lots of Brits will have taken the ferries across to Roscoff or Saint-Malo to be ready when the four day event begins. Regulars can be seen with wellingtons and a range of clothes and protective outfits that suggest it has more than a musical affinity with Glastonbury!

But there are plenty of other festivals in Brittany over the summer period – folk, rock and jazz – that you should consider. And thefestivals don’t just have French language acts. This year you will catch entertainment by Portishead, The Black Keys, Lily Allen, Artic Monkeys, Sinead O’Connor, Elton John, Franz Ferdinand, Kavinsky and Jamie XX.

 – Fest Jazz, an Anglo-French jazz festival where the main day is on Sunday 27th July. Then there will be jazz from 18 groups and over 100 musicians in five venues all within a three minutes walk of each other.– Châteauneuf-du-Faou: 25-27 July. It all happens in this village and alongside the banks of the River Aulne.

Festival de Cornouaille, now over 90 years old, this is the festival of Breton cultural. Taking place in Quimper, there will be over 180 different events taking place: 22-27 July

–  Jazz à Vannes, the pre-eminent jazz festival in Brittany takes place in Vannes from the 28 July until the 2 August  and many fans will leave fest Jazz and come straight to this. This seven-day event takes place in 18 different venues throughout the town.

Festival du Bout du Monde wich takes place from August 1st- 3rd is a festival of world music. Known for its family atmosphere, this festival is held in the Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique. With a coastline as well, this is an opportunity to listen to music and see the Breton sights!

– Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Brittany’s biggest Celtic music festival is in Lorient as it has been since 1971. 700,000 people come from around the world – not just Celtic lands – to hear an array of different music. This year Suzanne Vega is mixing with 5,000 other performers at over 200 events.   1-10 August.

La Route du Rock, a major league rock festival happens for the 24th year in a row in Saint-Malo which makes it so easy for Brits to get to by just jumping on the ferry at Poole, Portsmouth or Weymouth. Most of the 30 acts that will appear will be on the beach stage in the daytime and on a castle stage at night: 14-16 August.

Filets Bleus, a costume parade, with dancing and games that takes place in Concarneau from August 14-17th. Originally named after the blue sardine fishing nets, today the 100 year-old festival is a celebration of Breton culture.
