Chelsea Flower Show -a day out to remember

By | Category: Travel news

Chelsea Flower ShowThe Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, which is already a sell-out, opens tomorrow Tuesday May 20 and runs until Saturday.

An integral part of the London social scene the show which, although primarily for garden lovers, is also a great fun day out with the chance of spotting a celebrity to two. The highlight of a visit is the gardens which demonstrate the latest ideas in garden design, and in which garden designers compete for medals. These are divided into three areas – the Show gardens  where designers from around the world work with leading garden construction companies to create beautiful and detailed spaces; the Fresh gardens for innovative design with the latest in contemporary materials; and the Artisan gardens which favour the artistic and natural approach. This is the definitive place to be inspired with new ideas to take home.

Those fortunate enough to have a ticket for the last day also have the opportunity of buying plants at knock-down prices. The centrepiece of the show, the Great Pavilion is filled with floral displays from British nurseries, plant societies, and florists complemented by a new section highlighting scientific exhibits. Many of the exhibitors offer a mail order service. Shopping is also very much part of the day with over 250 retailers selling everything to help make your garden more beautiful from interesting sculptures to furniture,  gardening equipment and accessories. Without a garden, there are still lots of items to tempt –  cards, floral lotions and creams, mugs, and brightly coloured boots which may be a gardening item but are also great for everyday living.

Did you also know that the show is a place where lots of business deals are created and concluded? Apparently top businessmen from around the world join the 100,000 plus consumers who visit the show and arrange business meetings at the different gardens.

A picnic area, champagne and seafood restaurant, and various food stalls ensured that I didn’t get hungry. With the sun shining, a visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a day out that I, and I am sure any visitor, will remember forever.

Although perhaps not quite as prestigious, but usually less crowded, tickets are still available for the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in July.photo_4
