the first fans through…

Yesterday, Coronation Street -The Tour open its doors in Manchester for the first time. And there were hundreds of fans who had queued up to get into the Quay Street studios to get a look behind the scenes of the nation’s favourite soap.

At 10am a group of 30 became the first to go where no member of the public has ever been before, through the door to Sound Stage One which houses the Green Room, the stars dressing rooms and selected interior sets.

Coronation Street and TV fans alike have been waiting in eager anticipation for the Grand Opening of Coronation Street  – The Tour since planning permission was submitted last year. The tour did not disappoint it would seem as, for example, Gemma Hall, a visitor on the first tour of the day said: This has been an amazing experience. I have just walked the same path of some of the most famous Coronation Street characters starting in the Green Room, going into wardrobe, into the sets and then onto the street itself. Just incredible!”

Most of the 1,500 people who walked onto Coronation Street cobbles yesterday wouldn’t have even been born when the soap started with characters like Albert Tatlock, Ena Sharples, Jack and Annie Walker, Len Fairclough and the Barlows names from TV history. Except hat Ken Barlow, of course, is still around and will be returning to the soap soon. Sheena Murray, another visitor, said that it was like walking through a time warp as we saw footage from the very first episodes, Hilda Ogden’s curlers and Ena Sharples’ hair net.

The Coronation Street Tour brand has been licensed by ITV to Continuum, who will produce and operate this unique visitor attraction. ( They are the people behind many UK attractions such as Oxford Castle, Spinnaker Tower and The Canterbury Tales)
