The enthusiasm for snow sports

ski_wideweb__430x320,0With the ending of the winter Olympics yesterday (the Paralympics are still to come) has there been any impact on the appeal of snow sports in our countries?

The answer seems to be yes.

Snowsport England, the by governing body, says that indoor snow centres have never been busier with people eager to give snow sports a go.  The Ski Club of Great Britain’s  Chief Executive, Frank McCusker said: “The phones don’t seem to stop ringing and we’ve observed spikes in visitor numbers to the Ski Club website especially around the ‘learn to ski’ and ‘artificial slope’ information and advice pages. Dorset Snowsport Centre at Parkdean’s Warmwell Holiday Park has seen a surge in snowboard and Snowflex slope enquiries, following the recent success of British snowboard champion Jenny Jones. There are over 60 dry ski slopes in the UK and other centres have seen the same interest.

Snow sports have been helped by the fact that, in the Scottish highlands, there have been a few good seasons on the trot, this year being no exceptions. The weekend before last, The Nevis Range ski resort had its busiest day for 10 years on Sunday. Almost 1,700 skiers and snowboarders took to the slopes of Aonach Mor and snow cover was described as “wall-to-wall”. The resort was not even able to operate all of its lifts because some were still buried under the unprecedented amounts of snow. Nevis Range says that with the amount of snow that has already fallen there was a good chance the season could last until late spring or even summer. the Lecht has good snow cover

But skiing is perceived as being an expensive sport and The Ski Club says that market analysis seems to confirm that.  They claim that it’s not expensive to have a go.

Over £1.1 million is being invested in increasing participation into Snowsport England over the next four years. With the aim of increasing the number of people regularly skiing and snowboarding at facilities in England. This is the largest ever investment Sport England has made into Snowsport England.

Their biggest issue is whether they can keep the momentum that the achievements in Sochi have inspired to keep us all enthusiastic when the games have become a memory.
