2014 hot spots

By | Category: Travel news

Even before Christmas I was getting press releases suggesting which would be the most looked-at destinations for 2014.

Because the weather has been less than kind in the last week or so and continues to be so this Christmas week, maybe we are taking our minds of the winds and the storms by fantasising about where we will be going next summer.

Two days before Christmas, the holiday price comparison site Holiday Discount Centre, e-mailed me with where its users had been searching. And remember we are talking only about its users, nobody else’s and it probably isn’t representative of the travelling public except that its top country searched for is Spain. And Benidorm is the most searched for place. And those searches do seem to be pretty much match where the British and Irish holidaymakers have gone for the last forty years. There is still no country to topple Spain from its lofty perch.

After Spain comes Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Portugal amongst the short-haul holiday destinations. In the category of destinations which are further away, the Egyptian Red Sea resorts are number one followed by Mexico, Florida by which they really mean Orlando, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

Will these be the hot spots for 2014 as Holiday Discount Centre forecasts? Personally it would take a mammoth change of thinking to knock Spain from its top spot but the number two destination is usually France since it is just a channel hop. That doesn’t appear in their search listings but I am sure it will retain its major spot. And the company doesn’t cover domestic holidays so there is no guide to them.

Will these match the thinking of our writers when we publish our thoughts in the early new year?
