Glenlivit Distillery Visitor Centre wins

Following the British Travel Awards at the beginning of the month, Scotland’s Thistle Awards were made last Friday at Stirling Castle. These awards, as you might have guessed, honour those travel and tourism related companies and organisations in Scotland.

The regional awards for best visitor attraction were made almost six months ago and included the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Glasgow School of Art, Glenlivit Distillery Visitor Centre. From these it was Glenlivet who triumphed on Friday night as the overall winners. The visitor centre is in the Highlands with the nearest railway station being Keith on the Inverness-Aberdeen line. If you drive it’s about an hour from Aberdeen and Inverness and about four from each of Edinburgh and Glasgow. When you arrive, there are free tours of the distillery with a dram added for those who wish. There is also a more extensive tour but that, you pay for.

The awards also include one based on partnership and these are designed for tourism promotion groups be they loose-knit ones, companies that work closely with other ventures or something more established. It was Visit Lanarkshire that won the overall award from Edinburgh Bus Tours, Highland Experience Tours and the Breadalbane Tourism Co-operative.

Other national Thistle Awards went to Wilderness Scotland for the best marketing campaign of the year, the Tiree Music Festival won the best cultural event award and Johnstons of Elgin won the best shopping experience one. Algas Field Centre won the best nature experience award whist the Tour of Britain won the best sporting event.

In the hospitality sections, Duisdale House Hotel on the Isle of Sky won the overall best hotel and Ardtorna over near Oban scooped the best guesthouse/B&B category. In the best restaurant award the accolade was given to the family run Loch Leven’s Larder which is at Milnathort on the north of the loch.

Just a reminder to readers of something I’m sure you realise. These awards – as with all awards – don’t necessarily mean that they are the best. It just means that out of those that entered, these won awards.
