Finding something -and somewhere new

By | Category: Travel destinations

papua-ngIt isn’t easy travelling somewhere that no-one knows. It isn’t easy finding something that no-one has seen for some time but in Papua New Guinea you stand a chance. This is one of the few places on Earth where something new can be found.
It was only last year that naturalists found the world’s only known night flowering orchid. Why would it flower at night? Do insects in PNG only pollinate at night? Why just one orchid given that PNG is the home of more than 10% of all the orchids that can find in the world? And how many other plants just flower at night?
It is this sort of discovery and the questions that are raised that make PNG one of the most interesting places to consider visiting. Yes, it isn’t the easiest place in the world to get to but the effort repays dividends as other people have been finding out. Last April, the number of visitors rose by 12% from the UK alone. Is the appeal just the very slim chance or finding somehwere new or somewhere where your neighbours haven’t been?
That’s partly the reason people from the Uk there are travelling in increasing numbers. But it’s also because visitors can see over 700 species of birds, including 38 species of Birds of Paradise, dive in crystal clear coral reefs and trek or walk the numerous picturesque trails. “Picturesque” may be the wrong word. Some undoubtedly are but a huge number are rugged, tough treks through forest that few foreigners have travelled in. For those seeking an adventure holiday, this is also a place to consider.
Patricia Schultz, the author of the 1,000 places you should see before you die, is smitten with the country as we mentioned last year. It’s easy to see why.
