Calvia calling

There’s more to Calvia than merely Magaluf…

With an average spring temperature of 18° Calvia, located on the south west coast of Majorca, is a region most popularly known for nightlife areas such as Magaluf – but there is so much more to the region than just a great place to party and it’s the ideal place to kick off the hiking season in 2013.

Calvia has just launched a new hiking programme showing routes for all levels of abilities, including the GR221 internationally recognised ‘Dry Stone’ route from Es Capdella to Estellencs. This hike takes visitors through small towns, crosses Galatzo estate (a magnificent ‘Possessio’ Manor House in the shadow of Puig Galatzo) and meanders through mountains and farmland, all the while uncovering fascinating bronze age archaeological sites and architecture.

Hikers can also opt for a more gentle stroll on CR1, Peguera – Cap Andritxol, following a forest path among pine and wild olive trees until it reaches Calo des Monio, a peaceful bay famous for being used in a scene in the film thriller ‘Evil Under the Sun’. The route continues on to the defence tower of Cap Andritxol, taking in the 14th century pirate and medieval history of the region along the way. CR6 is a collection of three historical routes, commemorating the conquest of Majorca when King of Aragon, James I, landed at Santa Ponca to do battle with the Muslim inhabitants at the time. These are among a number of routes adapted for people with reduced mobility. On all the routes, visitors will enjoy typical Mediterranean vegetation, fields of carob and almond trees, with panoramic coast to mountain views, and wildlife such as Majorcan wild goats or even booted eagles.

Just a 20 minute ride from Palma de Mallorca airport you’ll find six well established resorts (Magaluf, Palmanova, Portal Nous,Illetes, Santa Ponca and Peguera). From any of these resorts you are perfectly situated to explore one of the new hiking routes in the region.

The Calvia walking map can be picked up from any of the tourist offices for only €2
