Britain needs to say ni hao to the Chinese

By | Category: Travel rumblings

Earlier this week, it was revealed that David Cameron plans to make things easier for Indian businessmen and women (along with Indian students), to visit the UK by offering a same day visa service.

It’s a decision that makes sense: simplifying the system will help boost tourism and therefore Britain’s economy.

Now the PM needs to relax the visa rules for Chinese too. Chinese travellers are currently required to fill out a 30 page visa form (in English) to visit the UK, whereas a ‘Schengen’ visa not only encompasses vast parts of both eastern and western Europe – but is cheaper too.

Little wonder then that while so many of my former colleagues in Beijing had been to Berlin, Paris and other great European cities in their droves, not one them had experienced London.

Cameron and the coalition are to be commended for showing India, that Britain is open for business. Now let’s say nihao to the Chinese.
