Viva Vienna!

Austria’s capital and largest city, Vienna, claimed top spot in Mercer’s 2012 Quality of Life survey. Zurich, Auckland and Munich also fared well in the annual survey which looks at 221 cities around the world.

Having recently spent some time in the land of the Maple Leaf, I was delighted to see that clean living Canada also came up trumps: Vancouver was ranked number five followed by Ottawa (14), Toronto (15) and Montreal (23) the consultancy firm’s latest report.

Vienna was voted the number one place to live

Mercer conducts it annual survey using 39 factors such as political stability, health care, education, crime, recreation and transport to help give companies compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments.

Interestingly none of the towns I have called home – namely Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Grand Cayman, Beijing and London – in my 30 something years on the planet, managed to make it into Mercer’s top 30. The message? For me at least, it doesn’t matter how clean a city is: culture and/or the promise of sunshine will always win out.
