London 2012’s retail triumph

The GB athletes weren’t the only ones to enjoy a successful Olympic period, with Olympic merchandise proving popular at retailers throughout the country. One store in particular which saw an increase in sales in this area was John Lewis, whose enviable location as the only department store at Westfield Stratford (next to Olympic Park) attracted millions of visitors eager to buy their Olympic memorabilia.

* Team GB’s success is continuing to inspire the British public as sales of sports product and Team GB clothing flies off the shelves.

* Running shoes and clothing is up 45 per cent as a whole, with tennis racquets up 20.6 per cent. Swimming wear, continues to do well, up 45.1 per cent, while large equipment, including rowing machines, are up a massive 100 per cent on the week.

It’s not just sports products that are feeling the London 2012 effect, other best sellers include:

* The Wenlock 20cm mascot (up 73.8 per cent)

* The Logo Keyring Union Jack (up 51.8 per cent)

* The Wenlock Queen’s Guard (up 37.6 per cent).

Even those who haven’t sprung into sporting action are embracing the London 2012 spirit with an increase in sales of themed boardgames, including the London 2012 Top Trumps Tournament and Team GB Monopoly increasing by 53 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

Finally, these Games are already proving they have a legacy as visitors invest in collectible items such as the London 2012 tea set designed by Nick Munro. The oar salad servers from the same range are up 41.7 per cent and the Long Jump measure tea spoon up 22.6 per cent, with the Gold tea pot also selling well, while the Olympic Legends signed photos have seen a sales increase of 32 per cent following Team GB’s success in the Velodrome and Aquatics centre.
