Vienna and the Tyrol

How we think of Austria

Austria is too often only considered just as a winter ski destination. But Britons visit Austria at any time for the walks, the culture, the food, the city breaks, the music and the sightseeing. And one obvious place for a city break is Austria’s capital, Vienna.
And many of us must think the same because in the first six months of this year, 188,000 bed nights were booked by us – up 8% over the same period last year. Only Germany, Russia, Italy and the USA booked more nights than us which suggests that the economic times are not having too much of an effect on tourism to the capital.
Last year nearly 180,000 of us visited the city spending, on average, just over two days there. Why such a short time? There is more than sufficient to send a much longer time there and to use it as a base for exploring the country. If you had been there this weekend you would have been able to attend the free Pop Fest in the Karlsplatz. So CD-Traveller has visited Vienna and the story written after a four day break will appear later in the year.
Last week after riding for seven days, bicyclists from the Tyrol, arrived in London raising money for Disability Snowsport UK as they travelled. Innsbruck hosted the first Youth Winter Olympic Games earlier this year and they decided to celebrate the link between two olympic ities by cycling here and raising money for a British charity.
Vienna will be hoping – as will all of Austria – that the residency of Austria’s Tyrol at Trinity House in London for the rest of the time of the Olympics will encourage others to visit the Tyrol, Vienna and the country. If you are doing some sightseeing at the Tower of London, then spare an hour or so to drop by as Trinity House is nearby.
