Golf may have been banned in China as recently as 25 years ago, but today the country is obsessed with golf (China is the only country in the world in the midst of a ‘golf boom’) and nowhere more so than Sanya on the island of Hainan – aka China’s tropical gem – which is bidding to become a golfing paradise.

Hollywood heavyweights and hip swingers such as Christian Slater, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hugh Grant and Matthew McConaughey have all been snapped playing a round (of golf) in Sanya which, according to Michel Goget, Chairman of the Sanya Tourism Hotel Association, is set to become the hottest golf destination in Asia-Pacific.

Hainan Island is home to over 29 golf courses and 13 golf courses in the immediate Sanya area including two at World Championship standard. These include Yalong Bay Golf Club which is designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr. and Dunes Golf Course designed by Tom Weiskoph.

Speaking at the inaugural Asian Golf Tourism Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, earlier ths week, Goget said: “With the arrival of Mission Hills to the island, one of the most famous golf resort brands in the world, the whole of Hainan and particularly Sanya will enjoy a halo effect.
