ScotRail brings back Club 55

By | Category: Travel news

From tomorrow ScotRail introduces its big spring promotion; Club 55. This follows hot on the heels of its reintroduction by Arriva Trains Wales, last week. The ScotRail promotion will run until 31st March, three days late than Arriva’s.
To state the obvious, this promotion is aimed at those aged 55 and over and this time, the fare is £19 return. As is usual you don’t need to book in advance, you can simply turn up on the day. You need to carry some proof of age with you in case you are asked but otherwise the only other thing to bear in mind is that there are some restrictions on when you can travel. If you want to travel Club 55 Premier the fare is just £26 return.
You cannot arrive into Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness before 09.30 and you cannot depart from Edinburgh or Glasgow between 1642 and 1809 and in the case of services connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh and vice versa, the 18.15. There are no date restrictions or blackout dates but ScotRail does suggest you avoid major sporting event days. Caledonian Sleeper and Jacobite Steam Trains are off limits for the promotion as are East Coast services at the weekend.
You can also use trains from Carlisle on the west coast and Berwick-upon-Tweed on the eastern side. So if you’re travelling from England you need only buy a ticket as far as those two places and then get a Club 55 ticket for the onward part of the journey.
Last year over 130,000 tickets were sold in the similar promotion so this is proving to be a very popular promotion not only with us but with the rail companies as they are filling trains in off-peak times at a time of the year when passenger numbers aren’t as high as at others.
So far the First Group has still to announce if they will be having a similar promotion this spring.
