Olympics: stay or go?

By | Category: Travel news, Travel rumblings

At the launch last month of the Great campaign – a project aimed at promoting Britain abroad to tie in with next year’s London Olympics, David Cameron declared “In 2012 there will be only one place to be. We are determined to make the most of this opportunity.”

However it seems that the majority of the British public don’t agree with him! A World Travel Market report reveals that only eight percent of the UK population have Olympics fever and plan to incorporate the Games into their 2012 summer holiday. Half said that they would holiday abroad as usual, with 36 percent holidaying in the UK but not visiting the Olympics as part of their holiday. A further six percent said they plan to leave the UK to avoid the Olympics!

So to paraphrase The Clash, should you stay or go? CD Traveller says: stay! Yes the Olympics will no doubt be eye wateringly expensive and inconvenient (expect public transport to be heaving) but it will also arguably be London movement in the sun and should help boost Britain’s economy no end.

But what do you think? Should Brits stay put next summer or use the Olympics as an opportunity to escape overseas?
