Club 55 Returns

By | Category: Travel news

Now the kids are back at school and there is less travel on our planes and railways, the sales and promotions start. CD-Traveller has already mentioned the British Airways and Virgin Atlantic sales. Also back is an old favourite; Club 55 from ScotRail and Arriva Trains Wales.
Scotrail’s promotion begins next Monday, September 19th and runs until 30th November so you have 6 weeks to take advantage of it. But the outward journey has to be started by November 30th. You can actually use the return portion up until December 29th so anyone fancying a long Christmas break can take advantage of the fare.
This time, anyone over 55 can travel anywhere in Scotland for £19 return. And, as many of you will know by now, ScotRail’s fare doesn’t only apply to within Scotland. You can pick up trains from Berwick-upon-Tweed on the east coast and Carlisle on the west. There aren’t many rules to this promotion. You can’t arrive into Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh or Glasgow before 9.30am and there are some restrictions on which trains you can travel on in the evenings. ScotRail’s Club 55 has proved to be one of its most successful promotions. Last Autumn they say, more than 50,000 tickets were sold- including two to me – so this time they have linked in with Hotel Connexions to offer discounted hotel accommodation as well.
Arriva Trains Wales offers a return fare for £18 but their promotion lasts longer. It started on September 4th and runs until the 14th of December. Like ScotRail, as long as you begin your outward journey by the last day, you can use the return portion up to a month later so it could be used for an extended Christmas stay as well. Like Scot Rail, the route network doesn’t just apply to Wales. You can catch trains from as far away as Manchester, Birmingham, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Crewe without having to pay more. But the company also has links with other companies which extends the deal and the range. Joining this time is Chiltern Railways who, for an extra £20.50, will take to and from London St Marylebone. (Yes I know this is a slower service but Chiltern also regularly tops the customer satisfaction ratings amongst railway companies.) A link with First Great Western (who haven’t announced their promotion yet) will take you as far afield as Taunton, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Warminster and Bristol; Mersey rail and Northern rail will get you as far as Liverpool, Southport, Oldham and Wigan.
Southern Railway has a discounted offer on advanced booking at the moment of 25% as well.
