Where the experts holiday: Geetha Warrier, director of marketing and communication at the St Regis Bali Resort

The St Regis Bali Resort’s marketing and communication manager talks travel

What do you like to do on holiday?
I would like to just take off my work hat and wear a leisure hat. I love different cultures and enjoy speaking to the locals and finding out their interests and way of life which I try to take on board. I like to canvass local opinion on what to see and do and which restaurants to eat in.

Where did you last go?
My brother has been living in Perth for three years and I finally visited him there for the first time last October. I spent just over a week in western Australia.

Do you know where you’re going this year?
No, not really. My friends are heading to Tuscany in Italy for a week in September to celebrate a friend’s 50th birthday and I would love to join them – especially after having watched Under the Tuscan Sun. However I am still considering this… A trip home (I am from Singapore but have been living and working in Bali for the past three and a half years) could also be on the cards.

Of all the places you’ve been to, which was your favourite and why?
I would say Cape Town in South Africa. I will not forget how, when I was driving in the Stellenbosch wine area, I had to stop the car and look at a view; I could have been looking at a photograph in a picture frame it was so beautiful.

Which destination do you wish to travel but haven’t been?
There are two actually – and they are Cuba and Greece.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see, that isn’t in the travel guides?
In Bali, I would recommend watching the schools of dolphin swim in the ocean at Lovina. It is an experience that will stay etched in your memory.

How do you plan your holiday?
I don’t really. I am very spontaneous and love to do things as and when I feel like it; I guess I am privileged to be able to do so.

How often do you go away?
Before having my son, who is now 20 months old, I would say I used to go on holiday at least twice a year. Now it’s not quite so much.

Who do you travel with?
With family and friends. I am not someone who likes to travel solo.

Where do you see tourism in your country in 10 years time?
Very much on the up. I think that tourism will explode both in Singapore (where I was born) and Bali (where I now live and work).
