Where the experts holiday: Jennie So, VP of marketing at Orange Hotels

What do you like to do on holiday?
Hit the beach and try out all the water sports on offer. That said, I also like to escape into the wilderness and properly get to grips with a new culture. And of course it’s important to get some rest so that you don’t come back from one trip, needing another!

Where did you last go?
I went to the Netherlands and Germany last year with my sisters. It was the first time that the four of us had travelled abroad together, with no men or children in tow! I had been to both destinations before but never with my sisters; it was great to go with them and laugh, joke, eat delicious food together.

Do you know where you’re going this year?
I have no idea yet, but I’d like to help make a difference so will look into volunteering opportunities; volunteering can be a very rewarding form of travel.

Of all the places you’ve been to, what was your favourite and why?
Mexico. As I mentioned above, I love water sports and Mexico offers many. When I wasn’t in the water, I slobbed out on the amazingly white beach, content to just admire the colours in the Caribbean Sea. But there are plenty of things to do for those who can’t bear lying on a beach all day; you really must not miss the ancient attractions of the pre-Columbian Maya civilisation.

Which destination do you wish to travel but haven’t yet been?
Kenya and also Tanzania.  I have wanted to see the “great migration” since I was a child. I hope I can see it soon because there’s no guaranteed that it will be around forever.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides?
I would recommend tourists visit the public estates in Kowloon so as to gain an understanding of how a family of seven people manages to live together in a 60 sq m three bedroom apartment.

How do you plan your holiday?
I seldom plan a holiday more than one month ahead. Once I have decided my destination, I will do some research online and check out some reviews from various forums. Then I’ll book my air tickets and accommodation online.

How often do you go away?
At least twice a year.

Who do you travel with?
Mostly by myself but sometimes I travel with friends or siblings.

Where do you see tourism in your country in 10 years time?
I think Hong Kong will still be something of a shopping paradise but I think (and hope) that ecotourism will have taken off.
