In 60 Days From 0 to 5 Star

For seven years, the Cross Foxes near Dolgellau had been derelict. Maybe even the foxes shunned the place as well regardless of their temper. (sorry, couldn’t resist the bad puns) But Dewi and Nicol Gwynne saw something in the building and decided it was for them. Two years later they opened; two months after that and they achieved the highest accolade restaurant and accommodation can achieve. 5 stars.

For anyone has tried to get their property rated at five stars you will know how much has to be done and grafted to achieve it. For those who don’t, it’s neither easy or, usually, quick. To achieve this status at what must be their first attempt is pretty impressive. Now the proof of their endeavours will be in the eating.

Will visitors approve as well? So far the 20 strong kitchen staff led by a French head chef seems to have been delivering. Five months on, the reviews have tended to be enthusiastic about the food. Unlike a lot of places it serves breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner and a hearty breakfast is recommended if you are going to use the Cross Foxes as a base for exploring Cadair Idris. the second most visited mountain in Wales after Snowdon.
