Pink or Blue Sir?

Pink Bedroon Decor

Pink Bedroon Decor

Was I hearing properly? All I wanted was a hotel room. Did the colour matter? Would colour influence whether I had a comfortable stay or not? Who knows, so, being a bit perverse for a male, I plumped for the pink thinking I would take a few pictures so that I could show my wife that such a thing exists.

The hotel I was staying in was called the nhow Berlin and it is the second (the first is in Milan) in a series of hotels being developed by the NH Hotel group. The nhow Berlin sits on the banks of the River Spree just out of the centre of the city. For that reason some people might opt for a city centre location but this hotel is an easy walk from the nearest station.

Only open for 4 months, it subtitled, “the Music and Lifetstyle Hotel Berlin.” The difference with this hotel is that, apart from the pink or blue choice in the rooms, the décor is modern, functional but artistic. My television is in a wave of glass at the end of the bed. My floor is uncarpeted but has pink and bluish purple swirls in the wood panels. And the shower and toilet is an interconnecting swirl of glass giving more than ample room to have a good turn in the shower without slamming your limbs into walls.

The towels are pink, the bedspread is pink and the strange hollowed out areas either side of the bed that act as bedside tables are pink as well. The soap is white though unlike the colour of the shower gel and conditioner which is a purplish pink. (yes I checked!) And it isn’t a subtle pink. This is a deep-in-your-face pink.

The Music Lounge

In the lobby and restaurant there are moulds of pink plastic springing up that act as the reception area and a serving area. The interior has been designed by Karim Rashid inside a concrete building that the hotel claims is austere. From the road, maybe. From the riverside it is quite striking.
The hotel is also different in that it contains two professional music studios run by Hansa which also operates a Gibson guitar room service. Apparently, you can hire one for the evening a couple are booked almost every night. You have at least 10 to choose from at the moment. This could explain why there is music throughout the public areas which I thought might be a bit over powering. But it isn’t as there is a buzz amongst the guests – mostly business people and a conference when I stayed. The whole stay is going to really please some and annoy others. I don’t think there will be people who don’t come down on one side of the fence or the other. But if you do stay, you should eat in the restaurant. I had one of the best meals I’ve had in a hotel from a menu that was inventive and large. Usually I just go to feed myself and get out. I stayed two hours and, yes, I did work as well which would have annoyed my wife no end if she had been here. But at least I didn’t take my laptop down as one guest did.

As for the hotel itself? Some places become attractions in their own right because of location, the quality of the food, the link with famous people of the past or just because they acquire a certain something. Nhow Berlin stands a chance of becoming just one of those latter attractions where people will come and look at the interiors, even if they don’t stay. And because it needs to be seen to be believed, this is the website complete with pictures
