I Love Tunisia

I Love Tunisia

This isn’t the name of a new campaign encouraging us to visit the country. This is just a small part of what Tunisia was doing at a trade show in Berlin this week. ITB in Berlin is one of the biggest travel trade shows in the world and Tunisia is one of two North African countries (Egypt being the other) trying to encourage the travel trade to advocate the country to you and I.

I didn’t collect this cartoon from the Tunisian stand. I found it lying around in one of the cafes so I have no idea who the lady is. Just like Banksy was leaving art around Los Angeles at the time of the Oscars and JR is creating black and white posters to hang on outside walls around the world, is Tunisia launching a street art scheme to encourage us to return there? No, this has to be someone who decided they didn’t want this cartoon of themselves. But from Tunisia’s point of view, the idea has worked. Firstly you can see the cartoon and the message and hundreds of other travel trade people will have taken the cartoon of themselves back home with them.

This isn’t a new idea. Cartoonists are often to be found at shows. Israel has used the idea over a number of years at a london travel show called World Travel Market. But at the present when tourist numbers to Tunisia are substantially down anything that reminds us that the country is getting back to normal – or at least normal as far as tourists are concerned – is important. At the show, there was a lot of discussion about the impact of events in the Middle East. Most people were positive and felt a bounceback in visitors will happen. But this year? A lot depends on the media coverage of what happens there. Until then at least the Tunisians are putting a smiley face on people.
