Format International Photography Festival

By | Category: Travel destinations, Travel news

In just six short years, Format has established itself as one of the most appealing international photography festivals. Is it in some exotic photoshoot destination replete with natural wonders of staggering beauty and jaw-dropping sites? No, its based in Derby.
The month long festival starts tonight. From 4pm this afternoon, the exhibitions are launched and they are all free till 9pm when a party starts. And that will cost you some cash. All of £3.
Tomorrow, the earnest work begins. Within the festival are two strands. One called Focus will contain all of the exhibitions and new work by leading photographers. The other, Exposure, will deal with 50 new photographers who one day might supplant the established ones. Format virtually takes over Derby. The exhibitions are to be found in 10 different locations in the city all of which can be previewed today. And then, after today, there are another 20 sites where linked work can be found. Tha main venue is still to be found in the Quad, Derby’s £11 million centre for art and film.
Changing during the life of the festival will be another part called Mob Format which has already be underway for a month. This is based on different street images which are then selected by a panel of judges. On their website, you can see a host of already chosen images, which, if you expand them to take up the full screen as recommended, the effect is better. Look, for example, at the group of images in Decisive Moment and see a mohican hair-styled man captured just as he decides to run into the road and rescue a child’s cuddly toy from possible attack from a car. That’s just one image. There are hundreds to keep you occupied for ages and that’s just by looking on the website. You can even take part in the work itself by submitting your own images.
