Is Egypt Rebounding?

By | Category: Travel destinations

Some might have have thought it too earlier to notice a rebound in people looking for holiday in Egypt but one supplier is finding that it has started already. At The New York Times Travel Show I found that Zak Fouad of a US tour operator called Signature Getaways was noticing that he was getting more enquiries about escorted tours there. And the enquiries were turning into orders.
He said that he has already got two tours booked for August with more to follow later in the coming months. There had been a steady stream of visitors to his – and the Egyptian Tourist Authority stand – during the first day of the show and I wanted to know whether he had noticed a downturn in interest. He had during the time of greatest unrest but in the last week or so he telephone started ringing again. Bookings were coming and he certainly showed confidence but then he would wouldn’t he?
What did those attending the show think? From a totally unscientific group of people who allowed themselves to be stopped and asked by me, I found that they were cautious preferring to wait a little longer. From those I caught after they had been to the stand, most wanted to know what the situation there was like. The tourist authority had pre-empted this with an update for travellers showing that 11 countries had recently removed advisories about travelling to the country but the US government still advised deferring non-essential travel. Despite the US advice, four US tour operators planned to reintroduce travelling from March.
So what are things like in the UK? travel agency bookings still choose limited interest but the lure of the Red Sea is proving attractive especially since the area was hardly affected by the events. Luxor – which did have a foreign office advisory for a short time – is also attracting interest particularly for package holidays. For independently booked trips it is still difficult to see what the situations is. Now that Egypt Air is resuming flights to Copenhagen from Cairo though, it will be easier to assess what’s happening just from seeing the number of people catching the flights.
