Saving Hastings Pier

By | Category: Travel destinations, Travel news

You will remember that Hastings Pier was devastated by a fire a last October. Piers are regarded with some nostalgia as things from Victorian times and our childhood. They don’t quite have the same number of followers as steam trains, but followers there are. So from the ashes, so to speak, an appeal is about to be launched to raise money to renovate the pier and bring it back into use. The sum required is relatively quite small at £800,000 and with the backers it has attracted, this should be attainable.
Jo Brand who lived in Hastings in a bedsit overlooking the pier is one of the famous people who is backing the appeal. And who better to say why than the comedienne herself. “Every seaside should have its pier, that symbol of fun, frivolity and, for me, many nights spent drunkenly dancing at its far end to the popular bands of the time. “ Coast magazine, the offshoot of the very successful TV series and winner of the Tourism Society’s annual award a few years back is also backing the appeal and has asked all its readers to take part in a sponsored Great Pier Promenade during British Tourism Week.
Gyles Brandreth launched British Tourism Week last year with the announcement that as many piers as possible will take part in the Week which starts on March 12th by having a party. As we announced back then, if your pier isn’t participating give them a nudge. If it is, then make plans to go along and enjoy an essential part of the seaside as we celebrate one of the UK’s most important industries and see more of our nations at the same time.
