Abu Dhabi maybe the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but for years it was showy Dubai that dominated the headlines. Not anymore. The Dubai bubble seems to have well and truly burst and the holiday favourite of footballers’ and their wives is being upstaged and overshadowed by oil rich Abu Dhabi.

This was evident at this week’s World Travel Market in London both literally (|Abu Dhabi’s impressive exhibition area dwarfed that of Dubai’s) and figuratively. Simon Venison, Director of Operations at Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC), revealed to WTM that a host of swanky hotels including the region’s first Rocco Forte Hotel and the first St Regis in the Middle East will be opening in Abu Dhabi next year.

So far, so Dubai… however a collection of cultural institutions such as the  Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Louvre Abu Dhabi will complement the seven star hotels for Abu Dhabi is determined to learn from the experience of Dubai and ensure its offerings are different. “We will grow exponentially, it is really starting to look up,” said Richard Riley, Chief Executive of Abu Dhabi National Hotels.

Slow and steady, it seems, wins the race…
