A Visit to Hooters

One of the joys of life is upsetting or embarrassing your children. They did it to you when they were kids. Now they are grown up it can be time to get your own back. So on a recent visit to the US I had a late lunch in a Hooters.
For those of you who don’t know, Hooters is a chain of American restaurants where the waitresses wear tight, low slung tops and the shortest of hot pants. Emblazoned on their backs is the slogan, “Delightfully tacky yet unrefined.” And the table is with a roll of something like kitchen paper to serve as napkins. It is the sort of place my daughter would object to so, of course, that was a prime reason to go there.
The food is typically American. Hamburgers, Philly Cheese Steaks, Buffalo Wings. The style is that of a sports bar.
So why do girls work there. The waitress told me that she did it on a whim. She was at university and needed a second job so she could save for law school. Other girls there were graduates or visitors from other countries who were spending some time seeing the US.
Whilst I was eating there were about 20 customers all male bar one woman. At the cash desk there were hordes of souvenirs for customers to buy. Here we have a restaurant chain that has become a tourist attraction for non-Americans. They go because they have heard about it. So out of the customers they get, my waitress told me that nearly a half of the people she waited from were from out of town. Visitors. And had come to see what it was all about. Just like me.
